Where To Watch All One Piece Movies & OVAs In Chronological Order (3)

With over 1000 episodes, One Piece is easily one of the longest mainstream anime series ever made. It's still going strong, and though the manga source material may be winding down, it doesn't make the act of catching up with the franchise any easier. That's especially the case once the series' many movies and OVA specials are taken into account.

There have been numerous One Piece movies released throughout the years, with the most recent being One Piece Film: Red. Of course, completionists will want to watch these movies and the many OVAs in chronological order to get the full story, even if that's a fairly daunting task. It is worth it, though, to see all the content that the vast world of One Piece has to offer.

Updated on June 17, 2024, by Natasha Elder: With the rapid reveals happening in the One Piece world, fans are more engaged than ever. With this engagement, new interest has been fostered in the franchise. Old fans are looking for new content while awaiting the next update while new fans are curious about the world. As such, we wanted to ensure streaming information for the many One Piece movies and OVAs was up-to-date.

Before the Romance Dawn Arc

The second OVA adaptation of Oda's Romance Dawn concept was actually part of the One Piece anime's 907th episode, which can be watched on Crunchyroll. As such, it takes a look at the fictional incarnation of Luffy and his supporting cast, most of whom resemble characters that would make their way into the final version of the series. For example, Ann in Romance Dawn is clearly a predecessor to Nami as they look very similar excepting their hair color, even down to the white and blue striped shirt.

In this Romance Dawn OVA, Luffy comes across Ann and her bird, Balloon, who has been captured by Shupeal the Hexagon, who wants to take Balloon's blood. Initially getting captured by Shupeal the Hexagon, Luffy eventually saves both Ann and Balloon from the villain. Luffy's past is fairly different, as his grandfather Garp is a pirate instead of a Marine, and Luffy wanted to be a pirate to follow in his footsteps. Additionally, his Devil Fruit abilities are teased before being shown, unlike in the initial episode where they are shown the first time he uses them.

After the Orange Town Arc

Made by anime studio Production I.G., Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack is actually the first animated adaptation of One Piece. To this end, it looks and sounds quite a bit different from the official series that would come afterward. It's also not based on any particular part of the manga, though it fits into canon between the Orange Town and Syrup Village arcs, given Nami's presence but the lack of Usopp's.

Sadly, the first One Piece OVA is not available to stream on any official service or widely available as a DVD, although it can be found on YouTube. This is due to it being made by a completely different company than the ones who handled the later adaptation. As a result, the One Piece "movie" is fairly apocryphal now, with access to it varied.

6 One Piece Movies Worth Watching (And 9 You Can Skip)

With 15 One Piece movies having been released, here's your guide to the ones worth watching and those you should skip.

2000's One Piece: The Movie is the first to be made by the company that would become the primary producer of One Piece. This movie takes place during the East Blue Saga, with the fibbing marksman Usopp having already joined the Straw Hat Pirate Crew. The storyline is very similar to the basic premise of the show, and it involves the lost gold of a great pirate named Woonan. Luffy and his crew join a boy named Tobio in order to find this treasure, all the while running afoul of El Drago, who has consumed one of the powerful Devil Fruits.

At a mere 51 minutes in length, One Piece: The Movie is a fairly quick breeze, feeling more like an extended episode than a true film. Unfortunately, Crunchyroll hasn't picked up many of the earlier One Piece movies, and this includes the first film. Thus, One Piece: The Movie is unavailable to stream on any service in the West, including Crunchyroll or any other anime streaming service.

After the East Blue Saga

Clockwork Island Adventure is the second One Piece movie, and given that it takes place after Sanji is introduced, it should be watched after episode 53 of the anime. The plot involves Luffy and his crew being robbed by new enemies called the Trump Pirates, with Nami also lost in the encounter. The pirate captain of the Trump Pirates, the Bear King, favors her and claims she will be his bride. The movie was initially released along with an unrelated six-minute short called Jango's Dance Carnival, wherein Jango, one of Captain Kuro's crewmembers, goes to Mirror Ball Island to seek refuge, eventually hypnotizing everyone to dance with him.

In Clockwork Island Adventure, the Straw Hats are forced to team up with the Thief Brothers. The Straw Hats proceed to an island that supposedly has the world's most expensive watch. While there, they encounter various enemies, including Pin Joker, who has a scar across his face due to a previous encounter with Zoro. The second One Piece movie is unavailable to stream anywhere, and there also aren't any physical media collections of the movie in the West. This puts it in the same category as its immediate predecessors.

After the Drum Island Arc

One Piece: Chopper's Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals is a bit of a mouthful, especially for another movie that has a runtime of less than a complete hour — although it reaches just over an hour when taking into account the accompanying short Dream Soccer King! wherein Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats have a penalty shootout against antagonists such Buggy the Clown. As the name of the movie might suggest, the plot centers around Luffy's ship doctor, Tony Chopper. Thus, it should be watched only after episode 102 of the anime.

Upon visiting the eponymous island, Chopper is promptly made into the new king of the animals living there. This makes him an object of desire for an enemy seeking to consume his antlers, however, leading to Luffy and others having to fight him off. Sadly, for those looking to see how Chopper took to being king for a day, they'll be unable to watch the movie in the West. It's once again been glossed over in terms of a Western localization, so it's unavailable to stream anywhere.

Alabasta Arc

One Piece Movie: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta is a change of pace, as it actually adapts an arc from the Eiichiro Oda manga. As its name suggests, it involves the Alabasta arc and should be watched after episode 312 of the anime. The story is essentially a retelling of Luffy and his crew fighting the then-Warlord of the Sea Crocodile and Baroque Works and thus should be watched after seeing the full anime version to avoid spoilers. However, it is similar enough to the original Alabasta Arc that fans in a rush can watch it to catch up quickly.

Thankfully, for those who want to start watching the One Piece movies, Adventures in Alabasta is currently widely available. It can be watched through the Netflix streaming service (as can the main One Piece anime and the live-action remake series), making it the first of several movies that aren't locked away in Japan.

After the Alabasta Arc

The story of Dead End Adventure essentially combines One Piece with the soon-to-be-popular Fast & Furious blockbusters, with the Straw Hat Crew joining a "street race" (in this case a boat race) in order to earn some cash. Having to face General Gasparde, a Marine who left the Navy in the pursuit of more power, as well as a medley of other crews, Luffy and his crew are facing threats constantly. Since it adds the character Devil Child Nico Robin into the mix, it should be watched after episode 135 of the series.

Dead End Adventure was the first feature-length One Piece movie, with a runtime just over 1.5 hours long. Despite being an actual feature-length One Piece movie, and thus attracting a bit more attention than its three predecessors might have, One Piece the Movie: Dead End Adventure isn't available to stream or purchase anywhere. Given that it's now 20 years old, it's unlikely to ever happen, although if it ever does become widely available, it is a fun watch.

One Piece Creator's Film: Red Storyboards Shed Light on Uta's Impact on the Series

Resurfaced storyboards for the One Piece Film: Red anime movie by creator Eiichiro Oda breaks down Uta's impact on the series' timeline.

Released in 2004, The Cursed Holy Sword was another full feature like its predecessor. The film focuses mainly on the Straw Hat Crew swordsman Roronoa Zoro, who temporarily separates from the rest of the crew, only to come back and seemingly betray them for an old friend named Saga. The town that the characters find themselves in has long been besieged by a mystical sword, and Zoro pledges to rid them of the weapon at any cost.

Originally, the movie was released with the companion short Take Aim! The Pirate Baseball King. Similar to Dream Soccer King!, Take Aim! The Pirate Baseball King has Luffy and his crewmates facing off against previous opponents such as Buggy and the Fishman Arlong, although this time they're playing a baseball game. The movie should be watched after One Piece episode 153, though this isn't easy to do. As with its predecessors, The Cursed Holy Sword is unfortunately not available for purchase or to stream on any service for Western fans of the series.

The sixth One Piece movie is The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle, which should be watched after episode 206 of the anime series. Unfortunately for them, Ratchet is fully aware of the island's unusual potential, and he aims to take control of it, and thus take over the world.

This movie returned to the more traditional style and tone after the changes made in Baron Omatsuri. While it is not as visually or tonally different as its predecessor, The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle is a lighthearted return to form. The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle is not available outside Japan for purchase or streaming.

Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island was a departure from its predecessors, as seen in its animation and storytelling style. Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who would later go on to make classics such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and the award-winning 2021 hit Belle. The story of the film involves Luffy and the crew accepting an invitation to the eponymous Secret Island, where its baron would have them participate in various games as a dark secret comes to light.

Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island would go on to be considered one of the darkest One Piece movies ever, which made it controversial among fans. It should be watched after episode 224. As usual, early One Piece movies — including Baron Omatsuri — were never licensed in the West. Thus, they're unavailable on any streaming service or for purchase through physical media. In fact, the Japanese discs are region-locked to only work on Japanese hardware.

Episode of Chopper Plus is another "canon" One Piece movie, as it retells the Drum Island arc from the manga. It's also the second movie in the series to focus mainly on Tony Tony Chopper. It gives another glimpse of the Straw Hats rushing Nami to Drum Island to cure her sickness, as well as the fight against the gluttonous Wapol, all with crisper animation. However, in this version, Robin and Franky are already on the crew and thus are included in the events that occur.

Episode of Chopper Plus should be watched after episode 325 of the anime in the One Piece watch order. Despite the events occurring during the Drum Island Arc, the presence of Robin and Franky means that any new viewers should wait until their introduction in the anime to watch this movie. As with many of the other Episodes, Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in Winter, Miracle Sakura can be streamed through Netflix.

The OVA prologue to the movie Strong World came out a year afterward, though it's set before. Set two decades before One Piece's story begins, it showcases the history behind the pirate world, namely the relationship between Shiki the Lion and Pirate King Gol D. Roger. In the film, Shiki tries to recruit Roger, given his knowledge of the Ancient Weapons. Roger refuses, resulting in their battle and starting the events that would eventually land Shiki in Impel Down, the Marine prison. The films later covers Roger's execution at Logue Town and Shiki's escape from prison, showcasing what the people the Straw Hats will eventually be close to were doing at the time, such as Zeff and Koushirou.

One Piece Film: Strong World - Episode 0 is the animated adaptation of the manga's Chapter 0. Despite its importance to the movie and the series' storyline as a whole, One Piece Film: Strong World - Episode 0 is not available on any streaming service. While most of the information contained within the movie can be found elsewhere, such as Roger's execution being included in the opening narration of the anime, it is interesting to see the reactions of the Straw Hat's guardians and friends.

Is One Piece Film: RED Actually Canon?

It's not uncommon for anime franchises to release non-canon films, which leaves fans wondering if One Piece Film Red falls into that category.

Strong World is the tenth One Piece movie, and it also involved more input from franchise creator Eiichiro Oda. The storyline involves a pirate named Shiki the Lion, who kidnaps Nami and tries to force her to join his crew due to her superior skills in detecting weather changes. His ultimate goal is to take over the East Blue due to his personal grudge with Gol D. Roger, who is from the East Blue himself, which is particularly distressing for Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji whose home is also the East Blue.

Strong World is set in between the Thriller Bark and Sabaody Archipelago Arcs and is Brook's first appearance in a film. This film should be watched after episode 384. One Piece Film: Strong World can be streamed through Netflix, as well as purchased through Vudu, Fandango, and Apple TV. Given the lively action, beautiful locations, and thrilling story, it is definitely worth watching this One Piece movie.

As this origin story took place between the Thriller Bark Arc and the Sabaody Arc, the Straw Hat crew includes nine members, with Brook being the most recent addition to the crew.

After Luffy and the girl, Silk, meet, they recount their stories, all while another crew led by Crescent-Moon Galley comes to attack the stretchy pirate. The next One Piece movie went back to the short length of the classic films and is the first to use CGI animation. Thus, it's more of a fun experiment than anything else, which is likely why its story involves such a simple romp of Luffy trying to recover his hat from Buzz, a dog with a Devil Fruit who stole it to impress his owner, Schneider. Like Strong World, it should be watched after episode 384.

Straw Hat Chase isn't available on any streaming service, Netflix or otherwise. This might be due to being a more simple project than a full-fledged feature film, with the runtime being significantly shorter than the films preceding it, at only half an hour. Nonetheless, it is a fun adventure that showcases the Straw Hats' signature fighting moves in a new, visually interesting manner.

While Glorious Island OVA has not officially been made available in the West through DVD or streaming, it can currently be found on YouTube.

Since it's merely a prequel to a larger film, the Glorious Island OVA duology mostly just features the Straw Hat Crew goofing around where they battle a Sea King that looks like a horse, waiting for Sanji to cook the meat of the defeated creature. Although it's largely just a segue into Z, it is fun to see the Straw Hats goofing around after the stressful Dressrossa Arc.

One Piece Film: Z was a more "proper" feature release, and it tied into the "Z's Ambition" story arc in the anime. The story involves the crew fighting the rogue marine Zephyr, who steals valuable objects called Dyna Stones in order to further his own destructive ends. Disillusioned with the way of the world, Zephyr plans to destroy it by triggering a cataclysmic event. As he trained many of the top marines, including Kuzan, otherwise known as Aokiji, he is a considerable threat.

The One Piece films feature some of the franchise's most beloved characters, but that doesn't mean they stay true to its canon.

Stampede's storyline is set during the Pirates Festival, which is meant to celebrate seafaring scallywags with a series of fun and games. Involving pirates from all over the world, the concept of the movie is somewhat similar to past films in the series in that many crews are all trying to obtain a treasure, with the Straw Hats fighting the other crews, as well.

Released for the series' 20th anniversary, it fits that the treasure in the film's plot once belonged to none other than Gold Roger himself. That fact, in addition to the return of many beloved characters such as Smoker and Boa Hanco*ck, makes the movie a celebration of One Piece's legacy. The movie should be watched after episode 878 so as not to spoil any new attacks. One Piece: Stampede is available for purchase through Vudu, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video.

The story involves Uta, who uses her musical Devil Fruit ability to send those around her to another seemingly peaceful world.

Uta does so due to her desire to end sadness through her singing, with said trauma actually stemming from Luffy's inspiration and mentor, Shanks.
